It is the sound of the Dart Music Festival (DMF) - the traditional start of the town’s vibrant festival season and arguably the most beloved event in the local calendar.

A Harmony of History: Where it All Began
The Dart Music Festival wasn’t born in a boardroom; it was born from a shared passion for community and the arts. Established in 1997, the festival began with a simple but ambitious goal: to bring a "world of music" to this beautiful corner of Devon.
What started as a modest weekend of performances has blossomed over a quarter of a century into a multi-award-winning event. It has survived economic shifts and global pauses, growing stronger each year because it is powered by the people. To this day, the DMF remains a non-profit organisation, run almost entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers who work year-round to ensure the rolling Devon hills are alive with music every May.

The true magic of the festival lies in its ethos. At its heart, the DMF is built on three pillars: Diversity, Discovery, and Accessibility.
- A "Free" Festival: While it costs tens of thousands of pounds to stage, the core festival remains free to attend. There are no ticket barriers at the Bandstand or gates at the venues. This "inclusive" approach ensures that whether you’re a local family or a visiting tourist, the music is yours to enjoy.
- Every Genre Imaginable: The festival prides itself on a "genre-blind" lineup. In a single afternoon, you can wander from the haunting choral melodies in St Saviour’s Church to foot-stomping Americana at the Bandstand, or from smooth jazz on the Quay to indie-rock in a local pub.
- Discovery: The DMF is a launchpad. While you’ll often find established international acts, the festival’s commitment to showcasing emerging talent and local South West musicians is what gives it that fresh, energetic edge every year.
